Great Boards Make A Real Difference
The recent, intense scrutiny of non-profits has centered mostly on whether they are complying with legal and ethical obligations. For the past two years, press exposés and Congressional hearings have highlighted behavior by board members and chief executives of foundations and public charities that appears to violate either the letter or the spirit of the laws governing non-profits.
These concerns are fundamental. But, frankly, they're just the start. Beyond compliance and ethics are critical questions of leadership and effectiveness. Today's non-profit boards can do much more to help their organizations fulfill charitable missions, whether it's helping the thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims or any of the other worthwhile philanthropic endeavors underway across America today.
