Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Since our founding as the country's first cancer hospital in 1884, Memorial Sloan-Kettering has pioneered countless discoveries in science and research that have led to standard-setting innovations in all areas of cancer diagnosis and treatment including surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and radiology.
The institution was founded in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital through private philanthropy devoted exclusively to cancer patients. In 1939, the New York Cancer Hospital expanded and became Memorial Hospital. Six years later, the Sloan-Kettering Institute was established as a cancer research center. In 1960, Memorial Hospital and the Sloan-Kettering Institute were joined to become Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Today, the Center continues to grow to meet the needs of our patients, and those worldwide who benefit from our research.
