One of the most common reasons dogs and cats are presented to a veterinarian is because of gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss. Some dogs and cats have serious conditions such as pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas that can lead to severe complications or even death. Other patients have less serious conditions, but are abandoned by their owners because of chronic vomiting or diarrhea - a devastating impact on our companion animals.
Gastrointestinal diseases are also common in humans, and more than 13,000 physicians specialize in human gastrointestinal disease in the US alone. In contrast, there are less than 200 veterinarians with a special interest in gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. Of those, only a few are involved in the quest for new knowledge and better treatments for these conditions. Also, while the National Institutes of Health provide millions of dollars each year to study gastrointestinal diseases in humans, there is no money designated for the study of gastrointestinal diseases in dogs and cats. Therefore, progress in this area is very slow.
