Use a Geriatric Specialist?
We can expect the number of will contests to increase significantly as the U.S. population ages. In 1990 there were three million Americans over the age of 85. By 2020 that number will increase to eight million, and by 2050 there will be 15 million to 18 million. That's the good news.
Unfortunately, with age can come diminished capacity. At age 60, 1 percent of the population suffers from a degenerative dementing illness, such as Alzheimer's disease. This percentage doubles every five years up until age 85. At 85, almost half of the community-based (non-institutionalized) elderly population suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Other mental illnesses, such as depression, psychosis, substance abuse and delirium also may compromise soundness of mind. Even an elderly American with no serious mental or physical illness may become a victim of undue influence.
