The Role of a Care Manager
A key member to complete the estate-planning team
The typical participants in an estate-planning team include the attorney, certified public accountant (CPA), insurance consultant and wealth manager. The optimal approach is a team effort that coordinates all advisors. But many families need more, especially if they're dealing with a family member who's elderly, living with a chronic illness or disability or facing other health challenges. In those situations, a care manager can be a key member to complete the estate-planning team.
Care managers are typically social workers, registered nurses (RNs) or comparable service professionals. They can comprehensively evaluate an individual's physical health and wellness, memory and mental health status, functional abilities, social support networks, financial resources and living environment. They then make recommendations for care based on the information gathered from the assessment, coupled with an understanding of the client's wishes.
