On the Cover

Our cover this month, “Vichy — Comité Des Fêtes” (42 in. by 31 in.) by Roger Broders, sold for $13,000 at Swann Auction Galleries' recent “The Complete Poster Works of Roger Broders” sale on Dec. 15, 2011, in New York City. In the wake of the first Winter Olympics, which took place in Chamonix in 1924, there was an explosion of tourist interest in the French Alps and other mountain locations as possible vacation destinations. Concurrently, advances in railroad technology cast trains as the most comfortable and luxurious method of traveling to these exotic locales. As a result, railway companies in Britain and France fought to promote themselves as the best means of travel for affluent European tourists.

Broders worked mainly for the PLM (Paris à Lyons et à la Méditerranée) Railway Company in France and produced an enormous number of chic and stylish posters depicting the destinations to which the railways traveled. They are notable for their simple lines, bold colors and elongated figures that expertly emphasized the contemporary elegance of each location. These illustrations, however, weren't limited to the mountainous areas that were popular at the time; they also included numerous images of beach and coastal locations, particularly the fashionable resorts of the French Riviera. Though for those of us in the grip of February's chill, a poster isn't at all necessary to make the French Riviera appealing.
